[Abstract (1)]
Recently we have established the operational ocean curent forecast including both geostrophic and tidal currents in Japan coastal ocean (Varlamov et al. 2015). We analyze such concurrent simulation result focusing on possible interactions between geostrophic phenomena and baroclinic tide. Four sites of active M2 internal tide variability in open ocean (hot spots): Tokara Strait, Izu Ridge, Luzon Strait, and Ogasawara Ridge, are detected from both the satellite observation and the simulation. Energy cycle analysis of the simulated M2 baroclinic tide indicates two types of the hot spots: dissipation (Tokara Strait and Izu Ridge) and radiation (Luzon Strait and Ogasawara Ridge) dominant sites. Energy conversion from barotropic to baroclinic M2 tides at the hot spots is modulated considerably by the lower-frequency changes in the geostrophic phenomena. In addition, other applications of the operational ocean current forecast are briefly mentioned.
[Abstract (2)]
Some details of development and operation for number of regional ocean models for the seas around Japan will be reported. Depending on requested resolution, direct nesting to non-tidal models or two-levels nesting to tide-resolving models was realized. Increasing spatial resolution of models demonstrate they ability better reproduce coastal physical processes. One example is the signal of internal tidal waves on the sea surface that could be recognized on some satellite images. High spatial resolution models (~500m in our case) demonstrate much better presentation of this signal compared with lower resolution tide-resolving models (~3km model), when both are successful in reproducing general features of wave propagation. Other processes will be shortly discussed.
